Remi Tinubu empowers 250 elderly Ogun residents with ₦200,000 each

The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has empowered 250 elderly citizens in Ogun State with ₦200,000 each under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Elderly Support Scheme.

The empowerment programme, themed “Finding Joy with Old Age,” was held at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Abeokuta, and was aimed at recognising the contributions of senior citizens to national development.

Mrs Tinubu, who was represented at the event by the Ogun State First Lady, Mrs Bamidele Abiodun, said the initiative underscored the commitment of the current administration to ensuring that elderly Nigerians live with dignity and comfort.

According to her, the scheme is designed to benefit 9,500 elderly citizens nationwide, with a total of ₦1.9 billion earmarked for disbursement.

“Each state of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory, will receive ₦50 million for this programme,” she explained.

In her welcome address, the Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Adijat Adeleye, stressed the importance of providing support for elderly citizens and advised beneficiaries to make judicious use of the financial assistance.

Also speaking at the event, the founder of the Yoruba Nurses of North America (YORNNA), Prof. Modupeola Aka-Bashorun Adebayo, delivered a health talk in which she urged the beneficiaries to prioritise regular medical check-ups, particularly for breast and prostate cancer. She noted that early detection could be the difference between life and death.

Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs Adebunmi Ajayi and Mr Tajudeen Adetayo described the gesture as a soothing balm to their economic challenges. They expressed gratitude to the First Lady of the Federation and the Ogun State Government, pledging to use the funds responsibly.
