33 confirmed killed in Kebbi cattle-rustling attack as police, military intensify patrols

Security agencies in Kebbi State have reinforced operations in the Bui District of Arewa Local Government Area following a deadly cattle-rustling attack that left 33 people dead.

In a statement on Thursday, Police Public Relations Officer SP Bashir Usman said additional personnel and operational assets had been deployed to the affected communities in coordination with the military and other security agencies. Sustained area domination patrols are ongoing to stabilise the district and prevent further violence.

“The Command deeply regrets the loss of thirty-three innocent lives and extends its heartfelt condolences to the families affected and the entire Arewa community,” Usman said.

Preliminary investigations indicate that suspected Lakurawa militants entered Bui District on February 18 to rustle cattle, crossing into the area from Gudu Local Government Area in neighbouring Sokoto State. Residents from Mamunu, Awasaka, Tungan Tsoho, Makangara, Kanzo, Gorun Naidal, and Dan Mai Ago reportedly mobilised in response, resulting in a fatal confrontation with the attackers.

Authorities stressed that incidents involving heavily armed criminal groups require coordinated security interventions. Residents were urged to report suspicious movements through established security channels rather than confront such gangs directly, as these encounters pose serious risks.

Local sources described the gunmen as highly organised, targeting multiple villages and opening fire on civilians indiscriminately, triggering panic and forcing many to flee their homes.

Security operatives have been deployed to secure the communities, assist survivors, block escape routes, and track the perpetrators. The Kebbi State Police Command continues to urge calm and cooperation from residents as efforts intensify to restore lasting peace in the affected areas.
