2027: Jonathan has obtained PDP presidential form, will submit it publicly, Says party chieftain

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Sani, has claimed that former President Goodluck Jonathan has already obtained the party’s presidential nomination form ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sani, a former Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to ex-Vice President Namadi Sambo, made the claim on Tuesday during an interview on Trust TV, where he also addressed the ongoing legal debate surrounding Jonathan’s eligibility to contest for president again.
He expressed confidence that the court case challenging Jonathan’s eligibility would fail, insisting that the matter had already been settled by judicial precedent and could not be reopened.
“We are very confident that the matter will be thrown out because you cannot relitigate something that has already been decided upon,” Sani said.
According to him, only the Supreme Court has the authority to overturn earlier rulings on the issue, adding that the case before Justice Peter Lifu is expected to be dismissed when it comes up for hearing on May 26.
Sani’s remarks come amid increasing political speculation over Jonathan’s future, following reports of consultations and renewed engagements with key political stakeholders ahead of the 2027 elections.
Although the former president has not formally declared any intention to run or confirmed his political platform, Sani insisted that his recent activities indicate serious political interest.
“In politics, what matters is action. If you are interested, you go through the proper process, including obtaining nomination forms. He has done that,” he said.
When pressed further, Sani maintained that Jonathan had not only secured the form but was also preparing for its public submission.
“Yes, and in fact, he is about to come and submit the form publicly,” he added.
He dismissed suggestions that Jonathan’s name was being used for political speculation, arguing that the former president continues to enjoy widespread goodwill among Nigerians.
“Most Nigerians know him and are nostalgic about Jonathan. Many compare his time in office with current realities,” he said.
Jonathan served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, after completing the tenure of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. He later lost his re-election bid in 2015 to former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Since leaving office, he has largely remained outside partisan politics, focusing on international mediation and diplomatic assignments across Africa.
