Panic over herders’ rampage in Imo

Panic gripped residents of communities around the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), on Wednesday evening after suspected armed herders launched a violent attack, kidnapping several people and leaving many others injured.
The affected communities include Ihiagwa, Eziobodo, and Okolochi in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers, believed to be Fulani bandits and numbering over 30, stormed the Ihiagwa–Eziobodo FUTO road, shooting sporadically at motorists and pedestrians before abducting several victims.
Residents narrated how innocent commuters and passersby were caught in the chaos as the gunmen blocked the road and unleashed terror on the area.
Some of the victims who escaped the attack reportedly sustained gunshot injuries and were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri, while others were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Witnesses said the assailants operated for several minutes, creating fear and confusion within the university host communities.
Confirming the incident, the Imo State Police Command said security had been reinforced in the affected areas, assuring residents that efforts were ongoing to track down those responsible.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Henry Okoye, said the Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, had ordered an intensive manhunt for the attackers.
Okoye also assured residents that the command remained committed to protecting lives and property across the state.
