City’s relentless march, Arsenal’s calm authority: A weekend that shaped the season’s run-in

Manchester City strengthened their hold at the top of the Premier League table by reducing the point gap between the top team Arsenal and from six points to three with a match to spare with a hard-fought victory over the Runners while Liverpool left it late to secure bragging rights in a dramatic Merseyside derby against Everton.

At the Etihad Stadium, City edged Arsenal 2-1 in a fiercely contested encounter that could prove decisive in the title race. Rayan Cherki opened the scoring in a lively first half before Kai Havertz responded swiftly to restore parity after a blunder by City Keeper. However, Erling Haaland delivered the decisive moment in the 65th minute, finishing clinically to hand Pep Guardiola’s side all three points. Arsenal pushed relentlessly during eight minutes of stoppage time, but Havertz squandered a golden opportunity, firing over the bar as City held firm.

The defeat leaves the Emirates side in panic as the see their earlier hopeful ambition of quadruple, especially the Premiership which they have not won over two decades again after coming so close for the upteenth seems to a vanish before their eyes. From a lead of 12 points, they have fumble and wobbled to what looks like a photo finish with City now determined to upstage them from the peak. That would be the third consecutive time it has happened and fans are reeling under the weight of another miss.

Over at Goodison Park, Liverpool secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Everton in a pulsating derby clash. Mohamed Salah gave the visitors an early advantage, only for Beto to level shortly after the restart. Just as the contest appeared destined for a draw, Virgil van Dijk rose highest in the 101st minute to power home a header from Dominik Szoboszlai’s corner, sealing a crucial win in stoppage time.

Elsewhere, Nottingham Forest produced a stunning second-half turnaround to thrash Burnley 4-1 at the City Ground. After Zian Flemming had given the visitors a first-half lead, Morgan Gibbs-White took control of proceedings with a sensational hat-trick, single-handedly dismantling Burnley’s defence. Substitute Igor Jesus added a fourth deep into stoppage time to complete an emphatic comeback, exposing a fragile backline that has now conceded heavily this season.

At Villa Park, Aston Villa edged Sunderland 4-3 in a thrilling, end-to-end encounter. Ollie Watkins set the tone early with two well-taken headers and an assist, but the visitors mounted a remarkable fightback to erase a two-goal deficit. With the game hanging in the balance, substitute Tammy Abraham struck a dramatic stoppage-time winner to seal a vital victory for the hosts.

As the season enters its decisive phase, Manchester City’s resilience keeps them firmly in control, while Liverpool’s late heroics ensure the pressure remains in an increasingly intense champions league spot  while in the Premier League run-in.
