Nigeria’s first women radio station to hit airwaves soon

The first radio station targeted at women audience in Nigeria named, WFM 91.7, is set to hit the airwaves.
Already, the radio station which is being promoted by celebrated fertility expert and Medical Director of St Ives Specialist Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos, and TounOkewaleSonaiya, a veteran broadcast journalist, has already got a nod from the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) which recently issued it a license.
A close source said that the new radio the womenfolk access to a quality, informative and entertaining programming that will cut across business, politics, sports, news and entertainment from the woman’s perspective and a platform to engage on issues of local, national and international importance for Nigerian women.
Dr. Okewale is said to have been inspired to conceive the idea of a radio station for women and their family having worked and related closely with female clients as a specialist in gynaecology who has come to understand the plight of Nigerian women and their struggle to be heard.
Hallmark also gathered that the promoters recently carried out a talent selection exercise tochose “unbelievable talents and brilliant individuals” that would make the station the delight of the listening public with over 1,500 applicants jostling for positions at the organization as on-air-personalities, presenters, reporters editors, producers, and other support staff among others.
According to the radio station promoters, WFM 91.7 will not only focus on women and feminine issues, but will also cater for the male gender and the entire family.
“Though we are licensed for women, WFM 91.7 will also cater for the men and the family by engaging on issues of local, national and international importance for all. It will operate 24 hours of talk and less music. The station will address everyday issues for women and their families. It will be a reliable, leading and trusted source for all related news, information and matters of interests for women and their families,” she enthused.
