Military coup in Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso’s presidential guard Lt-Col Mamadou Bamba announced  in a coup Thursday on state television that a new “national democratic council” had taken control to end the “deviant regime” and wide-ranging talks were being held to form a new interim government that would organise “peaceful and inclusive elections”.

The military had earlier arrested the interim president and key government figures as the country prepared for its first elections scheduled for October 11, since the overthrow of longtime leader Blaise Compaore. More later…
