Kano gov Abba Yusuf dumps Kwankwaso’s NNPP ahead of defection to APC

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has officially resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), in a move widely seen as a precursor to his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a resignation letter addressed to the NNPP chairman in Diso–Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area, Governor Yusuf cited persistent internal crises within the party and the need to protect the broader interests of Kano people as the reasons for his decision.
The governor stated that his resignation takes effect from Sunday, January 25, 2026.
“I write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) of my decision to resign my membership of the party, with effect from Sunday, 25 January 2026,” the letter read.
He expressed appreciation for the opportunity given to him by the party and its members since 2022, acknowledging the support and goodwill extended to him during his time in the NNPP.
However, Governor Yusuf noted that the party has been plagued by internal leadership disputes and ongoing legal battles, many of which are currently before the courts. He described the crisis as causing deep divisions and disenfranchisement among party members, creating cracks that appear increasingly irreconcilable and generating uncertainty at both state and national levels.
“After careful reflection, and without prejudice to the party’s capacity to resolve its internal challenges, I have concluded that my resignation is in the best interest of the people of Kano State,” he said.
He added that his decision was made in good faith and with a continued commitment to peace, unity, and the progress of Kano State.
Alongside Governor Yusuf, 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen also tendered their resignations from the NNPP.
The resignation letter was acknowledged by the party’s Secretary in Diso–Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, who praised Governor Yusuf for his achievements in infrastructure, urban renewal, health, education, and economic empowerment.
“I wish to concur with His Excellency on the lingering crisis in our party. Though we are trying our best to contain it, we have no option but to accept the resignation of one of the most performing governors produced by the NNPP,” he said.
The mass resignation is expected to pave the way for Governor Yusuf’s imminent defection to the APC, in a major blow to NNPP leader Rabiu Kwankwaso and a significant realignment ahead of upcoming political battles in Kano State.
