Not less than 28 people have reportedly been killed by herdsmen in renewed attacks on Mbawa Council Ward in the Guma Local Government area of Benue State.

The attacks, it was gathered, happened between Sunday and Wednesday.

Community sources alleged that soldiers and policemen brought to protect the people did nothing to stop the herdsmen wielding sophisticated weapons.

Benue, a state in central Nigeria, has been the hotbed of attacks by herdsmen in recent years.

Recently, the state government said over 5,138 people have been killed by herdsmen in eight years.
