Fayose reveals details of Tinubu-Makinde Aso Rock meeting, claims president shut down 2027 talk

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has ignited fresh political debate after alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu delivered a firm warning to Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, during their recent meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

In a strongly worded statement released on Thursday, January 22, 2026, Fayose claimed he was revealing what he described as the “untold story” of the high-level meeting, accusing Makinde of lacking the confidence to meet the President alone and of being confronted with political realities over his ambitions and disagreements with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

Fayose alleged that Makinde attended the Aso Rock meeting alongside Plateau State Governor, Caleb Muftwang, because he “lacked enough courage to face the President alone.”

According to the former Ekiti governor, President Tinubu made a clear distinction between governance issues and partisan politics during the engagement, stressing that he was willing to listen to matters concerning Oyo State but not political grievances.

“The President told him that if it was about official matters concerning Oyo State, he would listen. But if it was about politics, including claims that it was Wike who pushed him to accuse the President of plotting a one-party state, he should, as usual, go on television to say whatever he wanted,” Fayose claimed.

He further alleged that Tinubu cautioned Makinde against privately retracting public political statements, insisting that the President rejected what he described as double standards.

Fayose also claimed that President Tinubu told Makinde he was not expecting any political support from him ahead of the 2027 general elections, adding that the President made it clear he would stand by his own party.

“The President told Makinde plainly that he was not expecting any support from him in 2027 and that he should equally expect the President to support his party,” Fayose said.

On the ongoing rift involving Governor Makinde and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Fayose alleged that President Tinubu reaffirmed his confidence in Wike, describing him as a consistent ally whose support could not be ignored.

“The President reportedly told Makinde that Wike is someone whose loyalty and support he cannot deny, and that whatever issues Makinde has with Wike are personal and should not involve him,” Fayose stated.

The former Ekiti governor suggested that the outcome of the meeting explained Makinde’s later public comments about remaining “comfortable in the PDP,” arguing that the Oyo governor had no political prospects within the APC.

Fayose also raised questions over federal intervention funds allegedly received by the Oyo State Government following the January 2023 Ibadan explosion, challenging Makinde to disclose whether the N30 billion he reportedly acknowledged receiving had been returned or accounted for.

The claims have added a new layer of controversy to the already tense political relationship among key actors within the Peoples Democratic Party and the ruling All Progressives Congress as the 2027 elections draw closer.
