Bring Back Discipline in Schools, Isiala Ngwa North Mayor Tasks Teachers

By ‎Izuchukwu Nwokoma

‎The Mayor of Isiala Ngwa North LGA, Abia State, Hon. Innocent Uruapka, has urged public and private school teachers in the LG to reinstate disciplinary measures for erring pupils and students.

‎Speaking on Wednesday during a meeting with heads of private and public schools at the Council Headquarters in Okpuala Ngwa, the Mayor said the absence of commensurate punishment for rule violations has contributed to indiscipline among students.

‎Citing an incident involving two missing pupils from a school in the area who reportedly boarded an unknown tricycle after school hours, the Mayor said his administration will continue to ensure that the right thing is done at all times.

‎He noted that stronger discipline would ensure that pupils remain within school premises or behave appropriately while returning home from.

‎The Mayor directed school heads to ensure punishments are proportionate to the offence committed.

‎He also asked them to convene meetings with parents and guardians to make the collection of underage pupils mandatory as a security measure to prevent future occurrences.

‎The Mayor further urged schools to be security conscious, collaborate with local vigilantes and the Police, and report any suspicious movement.

‎Hon. Uruapka commended teachers for their role in shaping Nigeria’s future. He also commended Governor Alex Otti of Abia State for maintaining relative peace in the state compared to other parts of the country.

‎In his remarks, the Education Secretary of Isiala Ngwa North, Dr. Larry Charles, commended the Mayor for his accessibility to teachers.

‎He advised school heads to avoid holding ceremonies without Local Government approval and to restrict unfamiliar visitors on school premises.

‎He also cautioned against pupils and students receiving unsolicited gifts, including money.

‎Correspondents report that teachers at the meeting expressed appreciation for the engagement and pledged to relay the message to parents and guardians.

‎Prayers were also offered for the safe return of the missing pupils.
