The newly constructed ultra-modern Umuahia Central Bus Terminal has been officially commissioned by Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, as part of activities marking his third year in office.

The facility, located in the state capital, Umuahia, is designed as a major transport hub capable of accommodating over 340 buses at a time. It also integrates commercial and service spaces, with about 30 business units, including shops, a restaurant, a motel, public conveniences, and administrative offices to enhance passenger convenience and economic activity.

The terminal features over 62 air conditioners, more than 30 public toilets, 22 shops, and other modern amenities aimed at improving comfort and efficiency for commuters and traders.

During the commissioning ceremony held on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, Governor Otti named the facility the Prof. Nnenna Oti Central Bus Terminal, describing it as a symbol of a new Abia State committed to modern infrastructure and economic transformation.

He said the project reflects his administration’s determination to build a structured transport system that supports commerce, improves mobility, enhances safety, and strengthens economic growth.

According to him, the terminal forms part of a broader transport reform agenda that includes bus terminals, bus shelters, traffic management systems, and the introduction of electric buses across the state.

“The days of playing small are over in Abia State. What we are building is a modern transport ecosystem that supports commerce, mobility, safety, and economic prosperity for our people,” the governor said.

Otti also noted that the facility was designed with accessibility, environmental sustainability, commuter comfort, and provisions for persons living with disabilities in mind.

He disclosed that the state currently operates 20 electric buses on intra-city and inter-city routes, with additional electric buses and 30 conventional buses expected to join the fleet soon. He added that similar transport infrastructure projects are ongoing in Aba, including bus terminals, shelters, and junction upgrades aimed at improving traffic flow and commuter experience.

Explaining the decision to name the terminal after Professor Nnenna Oti, the governor praised her integrity during the 2023 governorship election, saying her conduct restored public confidence in the electoral process.

“Prof. Nnenna Oti stood firmly on the side of truth at a critical moment in our state’s history. By doing the right thing despite enormous pressure, she became a symbol of integrity,” he said.

He also urged residents and stakeholders to support government development efforts through tax compliance, noting that internally generated revenue is critical to sustaining infrastructure growth.

The governor paid tribute to the late Commissioner for Transport, Comrade Sunny Onwuma, who initiated the project, describing his death as a painful loss. A minute’s silence was observed in his honour.

The Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Chief Austin Nmeregini, commended the administration for its infrastructural transformation, saying it had restored confidence in governance.

The Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Isaac Ukaegbu, described the terminal as a milestone in the state’s transport reform agenda, noting that it would improve traffic management, enhance safety, create jobs, and boost internally generated revenue.

Professor Oti, in her remarks, expressed appreciation for the honour, reaffirming the importance of integrity, accountability, and truth in public service. She expressed hope for a Nigeria where justice and honesty prevail.

The Managing Director of Planet Projects, Mr. Biodun Otunola, said the terminal is the best transport facility his company has built in Nigeria, noting that the governor insisted on strict quality standards throughout construction.

The event was attended by the governor’s wife, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, Deputy Governor Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, members of the National and State Assemblies, traditional rulers, clergy, transport unions, and other stakeholders.
