Customs Boss Seeks Traditional Rulers’ Support to Tackle Smuggling, Drug Trafficking in Yewa

The Acting Controller of Ogun Area I Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, Olukayode Afeni, has called for stronger collaboration with traditional institutions to curb smuggling, drug trafficking, and other cross-border crimes in Yewa land.
Afeni made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the Paramount Ruler of Yewa, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, at his palace in Ilaro.
He emphasised that the core responsibilities of the Nigeria Customs Service – including revenue generation, suppression of smuggling, enforcement of fiscal policies, facilitation of legitimate trade, and protection of national borders – must not be undermined by criminal elements.
The Customs boss expressed concern over the growing involvement of youths in illicit activities such as drug abuse, arms smuggling, and trafficking of prohibited goods, warning that such trends pose serious threats to the socio-economic stability of border communities.
“Our youths must understand that engaging in smuggling and drug-related activities is not only illegal but also harmful to their future and the development of our society,” Afeni said.
He urged traditional rulers to intensify sensitisation efforts among young people, stressing that community-based advocacy remains critical in addressing the root causes of these crimes.
In his response, Oba Olugbenle commended the Customs Command for its proactive engagement and pledged continued support in maintaining peace and security across the region.
The monarch reaffirmed the commitment of traditional institutions to promoting order and discipline, noting that they remain key stakeholders in safeguarding border communities and fostering sustainable development.
