Yemisi Shyllon Museum unveils second edition of Collecting Now exhibition

The Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art (YSMA), Pan-Atlantic University, has announced the launch of the second edition of its acclaimed exhibition series, Collecting Now, set to open on October 11, 2025.
The showcase will feature 90 notable works of traditional, modern, and contemporary art on loan from six prominent Nigerian collectors – Olufemi Akinsanya, Ifeyinwa Momah, Tayo Odunsi, Nonso Okpala, Bimpe Nkontchou, and Yemi Ogunbiyi. Many of these works are rarely accessible to the public outside private collections.
Following the success of its inaugural edition in 2024, Collecting Now has emerged as a key platform spotlighting the practice of art collecting in Nigeria and its role in preserving cultural heritage and stimulating the creative economy. This year’s edition is distinguished by the inclusion of two women collectors, whose perspectives highlight collecting both as a lifestyle and a form of advocacy.
“The Collecting Now series reinforces YSMA’s role as a pioneering institution that brings private visions into public spaces,” said Dr. Jess Castellote, Director of YSMA. “Beyond displaying exceptional works of art, we are shaping a vital conversation about collecting as a cultural practice that sustains continuity, strengthens the art ecosystem, and links Nigeria’s artistic legacy to future generations.”
One of the featured collectors, Ifeyinwa Momah, described her participation as an opportunity to share her personal connection to art with the public. “Art is everyday living – it fills my spaces, shapes my memories, and inspires how I see the world. This exhibition is meaningful because it allows these private experiences to be encountered publicly, sparking conversations that affirm the value of art in daily life,” she said.
The exhibition is once again supported by Ark Insurance Brokers, who will insure all works on display. Their renewed sponsorship highlights their longstanding role in offering specialised protection for cultural assets in Nigeria.
“Our partnership with YSMA reflects our belief that Nigerian art is a national treasure deserving world-class protection,” said Kayode Awogboro, Managing Director of Ark Insurance Group. “We are proud to safeguard collections of immense cultural value while reaffirming our commitment to the arts.”
Running from October 11, 2025, to February 9, 2026, at the Olori Funmilayo Shyllon Exhibition Gallery, Collecting Now II reaffirms YSMA’s mission to expand public access to art, deepen cultural scholarship, and celebrate the vision of Nigerian collectors as custodians of history and heritage.
