A serving member of the Nigerian Army, Chukwuebuka, has been arrested in Abia State over his alleged role in a robbery operation in which a victim was dispossessed of nearly N5 million.
The suspect, a lance corporal reportedly attached to the 14 Brigade in Ohafia, was apprehended shortly after the incident. He was said to have been found with two axes and a pair of handcuffs allegedly used during the operation.
In a video that has since surfaced online, the soldier appeared visibly distressed while being interrogated by a superior officer, repeatedly admitting guilt and pleading for leniency.
“My action was wrong… it was not right,” he said, as he acknowledged participating in the crime.
He told investigators that the victim was forced to hand over N4,999,000 and revealed that he acted alongside another soldier, identified only as Ifeanyi, whom he described as his senior and a member of the 13 Brigade.
The suspect added that he received N1.5 million from the proceeds of the robbery.
During the interrogation, the officer berated the soldier for his conduct, describing it as disgraceful and damaging to the reputation of the military. He also questioned the use of weapons and restraints against an unarmed civilian.
Despite his admissions, the soldier appealed for mercy, expressing regret over his actions. He also conceded that he was fully aware the act constituted armed robbery.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Army had not issued an official statement on the incident.
The case has sparked fresh concerns over discipline and accountability within the ranks, with calls for a thorough investigation and appropriate sanctions against those involved.
