UN CSW69: Osun govt reaffirms committment to gender equality

Osun State government has reaffirmed its commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment at the 69th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) in New York, as a high-powered delegation participated in the Celebration of Nigerian Women’s Day: 30 Years of Progress, Resilience, Impact, and Renewed Hope.
The event, organized by the Federal Ministry of Women’s Affairs, brought together key stakeholders advocating for gender equity and women’s advancement.
The Honorable Minister for Women Affairs, Hon. Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, and the Honourable Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Bianca Ojukwu, emphasized Nigeria’s dedication to strengthening policies that promote gender equality at both national and international levels.
Their addresses pointed out the importance of collaborative efforts between federal and state governments in implementing policies that empower women.
In an event held at 583 Park Avenue, featured insightful discussions on policy reforms, leadership opportunities for women, and the role of subnational governments in driving gender-focused initiatives.
The Osun State First Lady emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing gender disparities, highlighting the state’s strategic efforts in education, entrepreneurship, and protection against gender-based violence.
Hon. Ayobola Fadeyi Awolowo reaffirmed Osun’s dedication to the Beijing +30 agenda, citing various programs aimed at enhancing women’s participation in governance and economic activities. She stressed the need for increased global partnerships to support local initiatives that empower women at the grassroots level.
The Osun delegation, led by First Lady, Chief Mrs. Titilola Adeleke, included the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children and Social Welfare, Hon. Ayobola Fadeyi Awolowo; the Wife of the Osun State Secretary to the Government, Mrs. Adenike Adewumi Igbalaye; the Wife of the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Osun State, Dr. B.O Akinleye; the Wife of the Head of Service, Dr. Mojisola Aina; the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and Social Welfare, Barr. Abimbola Babatunde; the Gender Director, Ms. ‘Lola Adewale; and the Director of Women Affairs, Mrs. Oluwayemisi Oladele.
The delegation’s participation also reflected the strong backing of Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, whose administration has prioritized inclusive governance and gender-responsive policies. Under his leadership, Osun has implemented initiatives promoting equal opportunities for women in leadership, access to finance for female entrepreneurs, and social protection measures for vulnerable groups. His government’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aligns with the global vision for a more equitable society.
As the CSW69 sessions continue, Osun State remains at the forefront of the conversation, demonstrating its role as a model for subnational commitment to gender equality. The delegation is expected to further engage in high-level discussions, forging partnerships that will translate into impactful policies back home.
