Town planning commissioner urges zonal officers to curb uncoordinated development

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, TPL Olatunji Odunlami, has urged Zonal Town Planning Officers to enforce development laws and prevent uncoordinated construction across the state.
The charge was given during an official tour of the Zonal Town Planning Offices in Oke Odan, Ado Odo, Igbesa, and Ota.
Speaking to the officers, TPL Odunlami reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening service delivery and promoting orderly urban development. He stressed the importance of professionalism, transparency, and strict adherence to planning regulations to curb illegal developments in their respective zones.
“You need to understand your terrain. Organize formal meetings with Obas, Baales, and Community Development Associations to highlight the value of proper planning and documentation,” he advised.
During an interactive session, staff members raised challenges such as manpower shortages and inadequate logistics, which they said hinder operational efficiency. The Commissioner assured them that the ministry would review their concerns and provide the necessary support to enhance productivity.
Permanent Secretary Engr. Sakirudeen Salaam noted that the tour aims to prioritize capacity building, digital transformation, and the establishment of effective monitoring systems across all zonal offices to foster sustainable urban development and improve the quality of life for residents.
Also speaking, TPL Mathew Fatunbi, on behalf of the Zonal Town Planning Officers, commended the initiative, describing it as a timely step toward improving coordination between the ministry and grassroots planning offices.
