Outrage as nurse killed by suspected ‘one chance’ robbers in Abuja; another victim found dead

Abuja has been rocked by two shocking deaths this week, as healthcare workers and other residents express alarm over escalating insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Nurse Chinemerem Pascalina Chuwumeziem of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, was found dead on the roadside after finishing her afternoon shift on January 3, 2026. Reports suggest she fell victim to suspected “one chance” robbers – criminals who lure unsuspecting passengers into commercial vehicles for robbery.

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), FCT council, condemned the killing in the strongest terms. In a statement signed by Chairman Jama D. Medan, the council described the incident as “tragic, unjust, and brutal,” and called for a thorough, transparent investigation by the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

“Healthcare workers leave their homes daily to save lives, yet many are uncertain of returning alive to their families,” the statement read. NANNM also urged the FCT government to strengthen security around hospitals and major commuting routes, and to consider providing safe transportation for nurses and other medical staff.

The killing has sparked widespread condemnation from other professional groups, including the Elegant Nurses Forum. The forum described the murder as “painful and unacceptable,” highlighting the daily risks faced by frontline health workers during late-night and early-morning commutes. The group demanded immediate government intervention, formal recognition of health workers as high-risk employees, and visible security measures around hospitals and major junctions.

The tragedy deepened when another body, identified as Princess Chigbo Mediari, a staff member of an FCT parastatal, was found by the roadside in central Abuja on the same day. This second death has raised fears of a possible serial killer or a coordinated spate of violent crimes targeting commuters in the city.

Authorities, including the FCT Police Command, have confirmed they are investigating both deaths. Residents and professional groups are urging urgent action to prevent further loss of life and to restore public confidence in the territory’s security system.

The twin killings have sparked renewed calls for government accountability, enhanced policing, and better protection for vulnerable workers, particularly those in essential services like healthcare.
