Ogun unveils 2026 housing roadmap, targets 3,000 new homes, urban renewal

The Ogun State Government on Monday unveiled its 2026 Strategic Housing Roadmap, outlining plans to deliver 3,000 additional affordable housing units within the year as part of a broader urban renewal and housing expansion drive.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abeokuta, the Commissioner for Housing, Engr. Jamiu Omoniyi, said the initiative aligns with the vision of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration to complete over 10,000 housing units before the end of its tenure.
Omoniyi explained that the state’s housing policy has evolved beyond construction to focus on restoring dignity, functionality and sustainable urban growth.
Citing the Ibara Government Reserved Area (GRA) Urban Regeneration Project, the commissioner said the once-degraded estate plagued by decay and illegal occupation has been transformed into a modern residential hub, with more than 150 housing units already completed and additional units underway.
“Housing delivery transcends the provision of shelter. It is about functionality, sustainability and inclusive economic growth,” he said.
Outlining key projects captured in the 2026 budget, tagged Budget of Sustainable Legacy, Omoniyi said the Ministry of Housing and the Ogun State Housing Corporation are positioned to scale up delivery across several fronts.
Planned legacy projects include the construction of an International Conference Centre at Iperu, a 2,500-seater banquet hall, the Appeal Court headquarters and judges’ residences, Ibara GRA Phase II comprising 50 duplexes, as well as commissioners’, political appointees’ and House of Assembly quarters.
According to him, the projects are designed to align with the state’s development blueprint, ensuring coordinated growth in governance, justice delivery, hospitality and residential infrastructure.
The commissioner also listed flagship housing developments across strategic locations, including Prince Court Estate at Siun along the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway; ISEYA Court, Oke-Mosan; Havila Court, Ibara; and Havens Court, Igbeba, Ijebu-Ode. He added that the regeneration of Ibara GRA would continue with the execution of Phase II.
Reflecting on the past year, Omoniyi acknowledged challenges such as misinformation and criticism over the pace of development, but said the delivery of 130 duplexes across Ibara GRA and the President Muhammadu Buhari Estate demonstrated the administration’s commitment to “facts over fiction”.
He noted that demand for the housing units extends beyond the state, with growing interest from Nigerians in the diaspora who view Ogun as a secure and attractive investment destination.
According to the commissioner, the Abiodun administration has positioned Ogun State as a benchmark for urban development, having delivered more housing units than all previous administrations combined.
“These initiatives are firmly aligned with the 2026 Budget of Sustainable Legacy. Our housing investments continue to meet rising demand for affordable, quality homes while driving slum regeneration and sustainable urban development,” he said, adding that the state remains on track to complete over 10,000 affordable homes before the end of the administration.
He further disclosed that work is progressing steadily on the Ibara GRA Urban Regeneration Project, where over 150 of the more than 200 planned housing units have been delivered, restoring order and structure to the area.
Omoniyi said 2026 presents another opportunity for the ministry to deepen its impact, expand access to housing and consolidate public trust, as it continues to implement the governor’s vision for quality, affordable and sustainable housing.
Dignitaries at the briefing included the Chairman of the Housing Board, Hon. Adeyemi Adelani; the General Manager of the Ogun State Housing Corporation, Mr Akinwale Ojo; the Permanent Secretary, Engr. Murtala Adekunle; and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Hon. Kayode Akinmade.
