Ogun govt refutes claims of anointed candidate for Awujale stool

The Ogun State Government has dismissed media reports suggesting that a particular candidate has been selected for the vacant stool of the Awujale of Ijebuland.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat, the government clarified that no individual has been anointed or endorsed for the revered traditional position.
According to the statement, the selection process for the Awujale stool is being conducted strictly in line with customary law, established Chieftaincy Declarations and relevant laws of Ogun State.
Hon. Hamzat stressed that the state government remains fully committed to due process, fairness, neutrality and respect for the age-long traditions of Ijebuland, warning against the deliberate spread of false or misleading information capable of causing tension, disaffection or a breach of peace in Ijebuland and the state at large.
The commissioner cautioned that any individual or group found fabricating, promoting or circulating such claims would be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law. He urged members of the public to disregard the reports and refrain from actions that could undermine peace, public order and the integrity of the traditional institution.
He further called on the media, opinion leaders and other stakeholders to act responsibly by verifying information through official channels, assuring residents of the government’s unwavering commitment to transparency, justice and the preservation of cultural heritage.
Hon. Hamzat also warned that the government would not hesitate to invoke Section 23(2) of the Obas and Chiefs Law of Ogun State, 2021, against anyone parading themselves as Awujale-elect before the conclusion of the legally recognised selection process.
