Malami, son’s terrorism trial adjourned to March 10

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday adjourned the terrorism trial of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and his son, Abdulaziz, to March 10, 2026.
The adjournment followed a request by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, who told the court he needed additional time to review the case file. Oyedepo explained that the prosecution had only recently received the matter after it was transferred from the Department of State Services, and he required time to familiarise himself with the details.
Defence counsel, Mr. Adedayo Adedeji, did not object to the adjournment but urged the court to strike out the case if the prosecution fails to commence trial on the next scheduled date, citing delays and lack of diligent prosecution.
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik granted the request, setting March 10 as the date for the prosecution to open its case and present evidence.
The trial has attracted widespread attention due to the high-profile nature of the defendants and the serious terrorism-related allegations. Legal observers note that the case highlights procedural challenges when cases are transferred between security and prosecutorial agencies.
The court’s ruling ensures that the prosecution will formally begin presenting its case next week, while the defence remains poised to respond to the evidence and arguments.
