FCT NUJ distributes rice as palliative support to its members

The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has distributed bags of rice to 600 members as part of its palliative support to the Council in celebrating the yuletide season.

Speaking during the presentation held at the NUJ Secretariat in Utako, Abuja, the council Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike
, described the distribution as the first phase of the initiative, expressing optimism about extending similar support to more members in January 2025.

She reassured members of the council’s commitment to the welfare of journalists, especially during festive periods, emphasizing the importance of fostering unity and providing relief in challenging times.

The Chairperson ,Grace Ike explained that Christmas, which commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, serves as a time to promote peaceful coexistence, love, and unity.

She added, “We decided to share rice during this festive period because Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, which symbolizes peace, love, and unity. This initiative aligns with our commitment to the well-being and welfare of our members, as enshrined in the oath we took upon assuming office.”

Ike disclosed further that this gesture, being the first of its kind under her leadership, sets the tone for sustained efforts to prioritize members’ welfare. “This is just the beginning. We are dedicated to making a positive impact and ensuring that our members feel valued and supported,” she assured.

“We established a clear criterion to ensure that over 600 members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the FCT are reached. This effort included collaborating with chapel leadership to review the register from the last congress and effectively reach out to their members,” she said.

She emphasised that this approach was deliberately chosen to foster active participation within the union. “Our aim is to encourage all members to participate and remind them that the union belongs to them. We took this route to demonstrate selflessness and inclusivity. When we took over, there was nothing on the ground to build upon,”

“There was no handover note, but we chose to be selfless and put smiles on the faces of members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, FCT,” Ike stated. “As I mentioned earlier, this initiative is the first of its kind, and it certainly won’t be the last. This is just the first batch; by God’s grace, we are planning another phase in January to reach even more members.she added.

“However, the key point here is that it can no longer be business as usual, where we hear about 30 or 40 people receiving bags of rice. We are setting a new standard.”

“We decided to come out openly to make this process inclusive, ensuring that everyone is carried along. Transparency is our watchword, and we are committed to being accountable and efficient in all that we do. This event is also an opportunity for the newly elected executives to extend warm Christmas greetings to all NUJ members in the FCT. For us, this is a step in the right direction—a welcome development aimed at putting smiles on the faces of our members.

“It has been less than a month since we assumed office, and as you can see, we have hit the ground running. Despite not receiving handover notes or any resources, we chose to take proactive steps, pursuing opportunities for our members and bringing tangible benefits back to the union. What drives this commitment is our deep interest in the welfare of our members. At the core of our mission is a desire to give back to society and humanity. This is what we stand for and what we will continue to champion.”

The Chairperson (NUJ), FCT Council, Ike, reiterated her commitment to revitalizing the union and fostering active member participation.

“Like I mentioned earlier, our aim is to bring members of the NUJ, FCT Council back to their union,” Ike stated passionately. “We want them to reclaim ownership of the union and engage fully in its activities. Our driving force is passion for humanity, the desire to give back to society, and our selfless dedication to meeting the needs of our people. We are humble, committed, and determined to make this vision a reality.”

Her remarks were met with commendations from journalists, including Ubong Ukpong of Daily Asset Newspaper, who praised the council’s leadership under Ike for its impactful initiatives within a short period in office.

“Grace Ike has performed marvelously well,” Ukpong remarked. “In just a few weeks, we are witnessing a transformation. The ecstasy and glory surrounding this new era are evident. As the Bible says, ‘The glory of the latter house shall be greater than the former.’

“The FCT NUJ under her leadership is showing remarkable promise, and it is clear that this will be better than it has been in years. For the first time, we have a female leader bringing the touch of a mother to the union. I believe that by her first year in office, she will have achieved even greater milestones.”
