Controversy trails sack of NPA MD, Ado Bayero

It said that Bayero would hand over the management of the NPA and all government property in his possession to Alhaji Habibu Abdullahi, who had been reinstated as Managing Director of the NPA by the president.
”The President wished him well in his future endeavours”, the statement also said.
What is more disturbing to stakeholders about Bayero’s sack was his replacement with the same Alhaji Habibu Abdullahi who handed over the reins of the office to him two months ago.
However, his appointment by former President Jonathan on April 30, 2015 had generated controversy as industry stakeholders thought it was not expedient for Jonathan to have made such appointment when he had a few weeks to leave office.
One strong challenge that plagued his appointment to head NPA was the suspicion, though denied, that his family still had a stake in Intels Nigeria limited.
NPA had said that contrary to media reports the Ado Bayero family of Kano has no stakes in the company.
It unequivocally stated that the Ado Bayero family of Kano has no stake of any kind in the port operating firm, Intels Nigeria Limited.
“Our Managing Director Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Ado Bayero is the first son of the late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero.
Contrary to reports in a major national daily and response to other enquiries, the Nigerian Ports Authority asserts as follows: Neither the late Emir of Kano nor his estate holds any subsisting equity in Intels Nigeria Limited.”
The management further noted that, “The Ado Bayero family disposed of the equity interest of the late Alhaji Ado Bayero in Intels Nigeria upon his demise.
This transaction was effected over six months before President Goodluck Jonathan appointed the distinguished corporate lawyer Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Ado Bayero as managing director of the Nigeria Ports Authority.
Ado Bayero had also keenly contested to succeed his father as the Emir of Kano and failed when His Royal Highness, Emir of Kano Sanusi Lamido Sanusi emerged.
Industry stakeholders suspect that both family politics and party politics have played significant role in his appointment and sack.
However, a maritime lawyer, Chief Olisa Agbakoba, reckons that the outgoing government of President Jonathan had no reason to be making appointments at such critical time.
He explained that such appointments should have been left for the incoming government to do.
‘’So I’ m not surprised that the appointment has been reversed”, said Agbakoba.
