Amid fanfare, Delta Governor flags off Otovwodo flyover project in Ughelli

Amid widespread fanfare, Delta State Governor Elder Sheriff Oborevwori earlier this week flagged off the construction of the Otovwodo Flyover in Ughelli North, describing the project as a permanent solution to chronic traffic congestion at one of the state’s busiest junctions.

The governor said the flyover aligns with his administration’s infrastructure renewal agenda, emphasizing durable road construction, prudent use of resources, and enhanced connectivity across both urban and rural areas. “Rapid population growth in the local government has overstretched Ughelli’s road network, particularly at the Otovwodo Junction along the East–West Road, turning it into a notorious traffic bottleneck that costs commuters several productive hours daily,” he said, adding that he had personally experienced the gridlock at the junction.

As an interim measure, Governor Oborevwori noted that his administration had constructed alternative routes, including Uduere, Okogbe, Oru, and Edo streets, as well as Royal Avenue linking Agbarha-Otor Road, to ease traffic ahead of the flyover.

The Managing Director of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Engr. Dr. Peer Lubasch, expressed gratitude to the state government for awarding the contract, describing it as a validation of the company’s technical expertise and its strong partnership with Delta State.

“We see this award not just as a contract, but as a testament to the strong partnership between our company and this great state,” Lubasch said. He praised the governor’s vision under the M.O.R.E. Agenda – the BIG HEART – and said Julius Berger is privileged to continue its role in transforming Ughelli’s road network.

The flyover project features a 15-span, two-lane dual carriageway, complete with connecting roads, roundabouts, modern drainage systems, and solar street lighting. Lubasch emphasized that the company is committed to delivering the project to the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficiency, while minimizing disruption to daily life, and called for the cooperation of residents throughout the construction period.

Valued at ₦39.3 billion, the Otovwodo Flyover is expected to be completed within 12 months. The project aims to reduce travel time, improve safety, enhance connectivity across urban and rural areas, and stimulate economic activity in the region.

The flag-off ceremony, which took on the atmosphere of a carnival, was attended by royal fathers, community leaders, members of the State Executive Council, Delta State Assembly, as well as members of the Senate and House of Representatives representing the state. Julius Berger was represented by its Managing Director, Regional Manager for the South and East, Engr. Friedrich Wieser, and Project Manager, Engr. Thomas Haug, among others.
