Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has used the occasion of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day to call on Nigerians to rise above the nation’s shortcomings and rededicate themselves to the ideals for which compatriots lived and died.

Speaking on Thursday, January 15, at the Aguiyi Ironsi Cenotaph, Ogurube Layout, Umuahia, Governor Otti emphasised that nation-building requires deliberate effort from citizens and leaders across all sectors of society.

“We are encouraged to be as courageous as our compatriots who chose the path of military service, and to live by principles that build character, guide ethical decision-making, and strengthen institutions,” Otti said.

The governor added, “We cannot build a great nation by simply celebrating victories. It is through the active engagement of citizens and leaders in various fields, working to inspire positive change, that we can achieve national progress.”

Highlighting the virtues of military service, Otti noted that qualities such as honour, fortitude, and temperance are not only central to the armed forces but can also guide everyday citizens in serving their communities with integrity.

Governor Otti described the Nigerian Armed Forces as a key institution that has preserved national unity and evolved over the years to support democratic structures, in addition to its foundational role of defending the country’s territorial integrity.

“Our healing from past wounds may not be complete, but since 1970, Nigeria has made steady progress in redefining its true essence,” he said.

The Remembrance Day ceremony, Otti explained, provides the government the opportunity to honour the memories of those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and celebrate those whose courage preserves the nation’s sovereignty.

He commended security agencies in Abia for their unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property in both urban and rural areas, assuring that his administration would continue to provide the necessary support for them to discharge their duties effectively.

“In Abia, we are grateful to members of the Armed Forces for their dedication to peace and security. The state has moved from past anxieties to become one of the safest destinations for living and travel, thanks to the commitment of our partners in various security establishments,” Otti said.

The governor also paid tribute to fallen heroes and service personnel who lost their lives in active duty in Abia State last year. He reassured that the state government would continue to support their families, including sustaining scholarships for their children up to tertiary level.

“We remain committed to the welfare of spouses and children of deceased personnel, providing sustenance for adults and scholarships for the children to pursue higher education,” he said.

The ceremony included the laying of wreaths on the tomb of an unknown soldier, the release of pigeons symbolising peace, and gun salutes. The event was attended by Deputy Governor Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, representatives of the Chief Judge, acting Secretary to the State Government, Chief of Staff, Commissioners, service commanders, Chairman of the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, clergymen, and members of the Nigerian Legion, among others.
