BREAKING: Plateau governor Mutfwang defects to APC
Plateau State Governor, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has formally joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), barely days after announcing his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in a move widely seen as a major political shift ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The governor’s defection was confirmed on Friday by the National Chairman of the APC, Nentawe Yilwatda, who announced Mutfwang’s entry into the party in a post on social media.
Mutfwang’s move followed his resignation from the PDP, communicated in a letter dated December 29, 2025, and addressed to the party’s Ward Chairman in Ampang West Ward, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
In the letter, the governor said he was quitting the PDP with immediate effect, expressing appreciation to the party for giving him the opportunity to participate in the democratic process. He thanked party leaders, members and supporters for their support during his time in the opposition party.
“I sincerely appreciate the PDP for providing me the political platform to participate in the democratic process. I acknowledge the support of party leaders, members, and supporters at all levels during my time in the party,” he said.
Explaining his decision, Mutfwang cited prevailing political realities and his commitment to purposeful leadership, clarity of direction and effective service delivery, which he said necessitated the search for an alternative political platform.
Although the resignation letter did not explicitly name his next political destination, party insiders had earlier confirmed that the governor was set to join the APC, a move that has now been formally concluded. The letter was acknowledged at the ward level, indicating its receipt by party officials.
Mutfwang, a lawyer by profession, won the Plateau governorship election in 2023 on the platform of the PDP. His defection is considered a major setback for the opposition party in the state and reflects the growing wave of high-profile defections altering Nigeria’s political terrain as the 2027 elections draw closer.
