The Governing Council of Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja (formerly University of Abuja), has approved the promotion of 104 academic staff to professorial rank, the largest single elevation in the institution’s history.
The decision was taken at the 78th Extraordinary Meeting of the 11th Council, chaired by Senator Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuoso, which held on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 9–10, 2025, at the University’s Main Campus.
According to a statement issued by the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Dr. Habib Yakoob, 58 staff were elevated to the rank of Professor, while 46 were promoted to Associate Professor.
The promotions cut across diverse disciplines, including agriculture, animal science, Islamic studies, clinical sciences, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, radiology, ophthalmology, theatre arts, social science education, engineering, pharmacology, statistics, applied mathematics, nursing, and allied health sciences.
Congratulating the beneficiaries, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mathew Adamu (fcvsn), described the exercise as a milestone in the university’s drive to reward excellence and strengthen its academic workforce.
“This promotion is a recognition of your hard work, academic excellence, and commitment to the values and growth of the University. We expect that your new academic status will inspire even greater achievements in teaching, research, mentorship, and community service,” Adamu said.
He noted that the unprecedented scale of the promotions reflected the commitment of the Governing Council and Management to build a stronger academic base for the university’s transformation into a world-class institution.
“This promotion is particularly remarkable because the number of staff elevated is the highest in the history of this University. It is a credit to the Council, management, and the entire University community for prioritising excellence and human capacity development,” he added.
Reassuring staff of a stable and rewarding academic environment, the Acting Vice-Chancellor said the university was determined to sustain an improved and timely promotion system that would motivate staff and drive institutional growth.
“On behalf of the Governing Council and Management, I congratulate you all on this noble achievement,” he said.
