Wolves Stun Liverpool as Atlético Madrid Edge Barcelona to Reach Copa del Rey Final

Wolves players celebrate goal against Liverpool

An action-packed weekend of football delivered drama across England and Spain, with Wolverhampton Wanderers claiming a famous win over Liverpool and Atlético Madrid sealing their place in the Copa del Rey final despite defeat to Barcelona.

The round of fixtures began with Everton securing a comfortable 2–0 victory over Burnley at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. James Tarkowski opened the scoring in the first half, rising highest to power home a header from James Garner’s precise delivery. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall doubled the advantage shortly after the hour mark, effectively putting the contest beyond reach.

Burnley struggled to impose themselves throughout and only mounted a late push in stoppage time. However, Jordan Pickford and the Everton defence stood firm to preserve a deserved clean sheet and secure all three points.

At the Vitality Stadium, Bournemouth and Brentford played out a tense goalless draw. The Cherries were left to rue missed opportunities, with Marcus Tavernier leading a wasteful attacking display. Brentford absorbed sustained pressure and escaped with a hard-earned clean sheet, while Bournemouth will view the stalemate as two points dropped.

Sunderland produced a resolute performance to claim a narrow 1–0 victory away at Elland Road. Habib Diarra calmly converted a penalty that ultimately proved decisive. Leeds United dominated large spells and pressed relentlessly, but their finishing let them down. A dramatic stoppage-time effort from Jaka Bijol was denied in a frantic finale, allowing the Black Cats to complete a disciplined smash-and-grab triumph.

The headline result in the Premier League came at Molineux, where Wolverhampton Wanderers defeated Liverpool 2–1 in dramatic fashion. Rodrigo Gomes broke the deadlock late in the second half after coming off the bench, only for Mohamed Salah to respond swiftly for the visitors. Just as the game seemed destined for a draw, André struck a sensational 94th-minute winner from outside the box to seal a memorable victory.

Liverpool forced eleven corners and controlled large spells of possession but failed to convert their dominance into goals. Wolves’ resilience and clinical finishing proved decisive as they denied the reigning champions a move up to fourth place in the league table.

In Spain, Barcelona produced an emphatic 3–0 home victory over Atlético Madrid in the second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final clash. Marc Bernal starred with a clinical brace, while Raphinha added a penalty just before halftime. Barcelona dominated proceedings, forcing fifteen corners while restricting Atlético to none — a statistic that highlighted their superiority on the night.

However, despite the comprehensive win, it was Atlético Madrid who progressed to the final on a 4–3 aggregate scoreline. Diego Simeone’s side will now travel to Seville in April for the Copa del Rey final, having done enough over the two legs to edge past the Catalan giants.
