Who Picks the Imo 2027 APC Governorship Ticket?

Who Picks the Imo 2027 APC Governorship Ticket?

Hope Uzodimma

Several factors will shape the expected fierce battle over who eventually emerges as the APC governorship candidate for Imo State in 2027. Zoning, loyalty, capacity, and national political considerations are the major issues likely to determine where the pendulum swings.

Zoning Debate

On zoning, the Imo North District (Okigwe Zone) insists that its opportunity to lead the state was cut short. The zone argues that the tenure of former governor Ikedi Ohakim lasted only one term (2007–2011) instead of the eight years they believe the district deserved.

Based on this argument, leaders from Okigwe maintain that for equity, fairness, and justice to prevail, the Imo Charter of Equity currently being promoted by Governor Hope Uzodimma must first consider Imo North if the principle is to be taken seriously.

Consequently, Okigwe leaders are strongly agitating for one of their own to become governor in 2027. For this to happen, aspirants from the zone would ideally have to emerge as candidates of the major political parties in the state. However, Okigwe has only six of the state’s 27 local government areas, which presents a numerical disadvantage.

Owerri Zone’s Argument

On the other hand, Owerri Zone (Imo East District) is also making a strong case for the governorship in 2027. Leaders from the zone point out that in the more than 50-year history of Imo State, Owerri has held the governorship for barely two years.

They cite the brief tenures of Evan Enwerem, who served for about eight months in 1993, and Emeka Ihedioha, whose administration lasted about seven months between 2019 and 2020.

As a result, leaders in Owerri zone have intensified efforts to push for the emergence of a governor from the district in 2027. This effort has led to the formation of the Imo Harmony Project (IHP), which aims to mobilize and sensitize the nine local government areas in Owerri zone to unite behind the quest for the governorship.

Orlu Zone’s Position

Meanwhile, Orlu Zone (Imo West District)—which has produced three governors since 1999: Achike Udenwa, Rochas Okorocha, and Hope Uzodimma—is also positioning itself to retain power.

The zone has 12 local government areas and argues that political power is determined by numbers. Supporters maintain that “power is given” and that “the majority carries the vote.” By 2027, Orlu zone would have spent about 24 years in power.

When the arguments from the three zones are weighed, many observers believe that Owerri Zone currently presents the strongest equity argument.

Possible APC Governorship Aspirants

Below are some of the politicians who could potentially emerge as the APC governorship candidate in 2027.

Dr. Ikedi Ohakim

Former governor Ikedi Ohakim previously served as a commissioner under Evan Enwerem before becoming governor in 2007. He hails from the Mbano area of Okigwe zone and is currently leading the agitation for the zone to produce the next governor.

Ohakim is known for advocating constitutionalism, the rule of law, and the principles of equity, justice, and fairness. However, some critics argue that many Imo residents have yet to forgive what they describe as “arrogance, impunity, and high-handedness” during his tenure from 2007 to 2011.

Nonetheless, his strong political understanding and personal relationship with Uzodimma could work in his favour.

Hon. Alex Emeziem Jr.

Hon. Alex Emeziem Jr. is one of three politicians from Mbaise believed to be favoured by  Uzodimma for the APC ticket. The other two are Chief Obioma Success Akagburuonye and Sir Stanley Amuchie, all from Aboh Mbaise LGA.

Emeziem served as a member of the Imo State House of Assembly representing Aboh Mbaise between 2003 and 2007. During the short-lived administration of Emeka Ihedioha, he served as Director-General of EBTRACO.

Since 2020, he has focused on business, investing in hospitality and real estate.

A major factor in his favour is his family background. His father, Alex Emeziem Sr., served as commissioner for Public Utilities, Works, and Lands under the administration of Sam Mbakwe from 1979 to 1983.

However, critics say Emeziem has the name but lacks a strong political structure.

Prince Eze Madumere

Former deputy governor Eze Madumere had a well-known political fallout with former governor Rochas Okorocha. Following the disagreement, he built his own political structure and contested the APC governorship primary in 2019 but finished second to Hope Uzodimma.

Madumere has since indicated his intention to contest again in 2027. While he enjoys considerable goodwill, critics argue that questions about capacity may affect his chances.

Sir Jude Ejiogu

Sir Jude Ejiogu, a former Secretary to the Imo State Government, comes from the Emekuku Ejiogu aristocratic family. He is widely regarded as an experienced administrator with strong bureaucratic and strategic skills.

Observers say he represents continuity and stability. Although he may not have the same mass following as some other aspirants, his administrative record and loyalty to the party could appeal to delegates who value governance experience.

Henry Nwawuba

Henry Nwawuba is a former member of the House of Representatives who represented Mbaitoli/Ikeduru Federal Constituency. He currently serves as Executive Secretary of the National Assembly Library Trust Fund.

Although he has not formally declared his governorship ambition, there are indications he may do so. One challenge he faces is relatively low name recognition compared to other aspirants.

Chief Marcon Nlemigbo

Chief Marcon Nlemigbo is a former chairman of both the PDP and the APC in Imo State. A successful businessman with strong organizational and mobilization skills, he is regarded as a loyal and committed party man.

He hails from Mbaitoli LGA, one of the most densely populated areas in the state, which could work to his advantage. However, critics argue that age may not be on his side in an era increasingly dominated by younger, tech-savvy politicians.

Hon. MacDonald Ebere

Hon. (Sir) MacDonald Ebere, PhD, is the immediate past chairman of the Imo APC.

Ebere is widely described as hardworking, energetic, and highly visible. His leadership of the party during the 2023 general elections—where the APC secured key victories—has been seen as a major achievement.

However, both supporters and critics sometimes accuse him of arrogance and high-handedness.

Chief Enyiannaya Onuegbu

Chief Enyiannaya Onuegbu, a former chairman of Ngor Okpala LGA and former publicity secretary of the Imo PDP, currently serves as the state commissioner for lands.

He is widely regarded as accessible and connected to grassroots politics. Supporters believe he represents the aspirational side of Imo politics and could appeal to voters seeking inclusion and service-oriented leadership.

However, allegations surrounding land-related controversies linked to the Ebuka Obi ministry episode have raised concerns among some observers.

Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi

Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi, who currently represents Owerri District in the National Assembly, is another figure to watch. He hails from Owerri North LGA.

Onyewuchi is often described as a politician with extraordinary political luck—or grace. He has won elections under multiple parties, including APGA, PDP, and LP, and is now a member of the ruling APC.

Whether that streak of electoral success will continue in the 2027 governorship race remains to be seen.
