Wema Bank has awarded over N4.5 million in prizes to outstanding teachers in its 2025 Wema at 80 Teachers’ Day Campaign, an initiative aimed at celebrating educators who have made lasting impact in their communities.

The award ceremony, themed “Celebrating Teachers with a Legacy of Impact,” took place at the bank’s headquarters in Marina, Lagos, where the top five honorees were announced and recognised for excellence in teaching, mentorship and youth development.

Speaking at the event, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Wema Bank, Moruf Oseni, described teachers as the “unsung heroes behind every meaningful achievement,” noting that investing in educators is central to building stronger societies.

“Today, we are honoured to celebrate teachers who have shaped lives and communities. As we mark 80 years as a bank, part of our commitment is to continue empowering the education sector and supporting those who nurture the next generation,” Oseni said.

The overall winner, Abraham Ngobiri – founder of Teens-Train and a teacher at Federal Government College, Enugu – received a cash prize of N2 million. Ngobiri, known for mentoring and counseling teenagers, described the recognition as motivation to continue his work.

“For years, teachers have given their all quietly. Today, we feel seen. This has renewed our drive to keep shaping lives,” he said.

Second-place winner, Mrs. Esther Babasola Adesada of Community Senior Grammar School, Ipaja, Lagos, who received N1.5 million, said the honour came at a time she was battling self-doubt.

“It is a reminder to stay committed, no matter the challenges. The world is watching, and the impact always returns,” she said.

Ms. Taiwo Alabi of Ikorodu Junior Grammar School, Lagos, placed third, receiving N1 million. She noted that the gesture highlights the value of everyday efforts by teachers.

The campaign, launched in September 2025, invited students and alumni to submit 80-second videos celebrating teachers who left lasting influence. From the entries received, ten finalists were shortlisted before three emerged as top winners based on quantifiable impact, passion, communication, and innovation in teaching.

The fourth and fifth place awardees also received consolation cash prizes and gift items.

The selection panel included representatives from the Lagos State Ministry of Education, Focus Teens Foundation, and Wema Bank.
