[VIDEO] Panic on rails: Kaduna–Abuja train collision leaves passengers stranded, injured

Passengers stranded as Abuja-Kaduna train collides

Hundreds of commuters were left terrified and stranded on Monday morning after an Abuja-bound train from Kaduna collided with another train along the busy rail corridor, prompting an immediate halt in operations and raising urgent safety concerns.

The early morning train, which departed Kaduna as scheduled, was approaching Asham Station when it unexpectedly collided with another train. Witnesses described the moment of impact as sudden and violent, sending passengers sprawling from their seats.

“We were moving at a steady pace when there was a loud bang, and the train came to an abrupt stop,” one passenger said on social media. “At first, nobody knew what had happened. Later, we realized we had hit another train on the same track.”

Eyewitnesses reported that the collision caused injuries among passengers, with some sustaining cuts and bruises from the jolt. Sada Malumfashi, a passenger on the train, recounted the frightening experience on X:

“Just dropped from the Kaduna–Abuja train. We heard a loud bang, and the train jolted to a stop, flinging people across. Many passengers were hit and bleeding. It was chaotic. Train delayed for about 30 minutes before resuming movement to Kubwa, but no official communication from @info_NRC.”

Video footage shared online captured the aftermath, showing the damaged fronts of both trains, with one engine partially derailed. Passengers could be seen helping each other along the tracks, highlighting the fear and confusion that followed the incident.

Emergency response teams and security personnel were dispatched to the scene to evacuate passengers and secure the area. While no fatalities have been reported so far, the collision has reignited concerns about the safety of the Kaduna–Abuja rail line, particularly the reliability of the digital signalling systems designed to prevent such accidents.

Commuters also criticized the lack of timely information from railway officials. Many passengers were forced to disembark at Kubwa Station and seek alternative transport to reach Abuja, adding to the frustration.

“I take this train regularly because it is usually reliable,” said another passenger. “But today, everyone was shaken. People were calling their families and trying to figure out what happened.”

The Kaduna–Abuja rail route is one of Nigeria’s busiest, serving thousands of passengers daily who prefer rail travel over the highways, which have been plagued by security challenges. Monday’s incident underscores the need for stricter operational oversight, improved communication, and robust safety protocols along the corridor.

Rail experts suggest that such a collision typically results from either a breakdown in communication between train operators and the control centre or a failure in the automated signalling system. The Nigerian Railway Corporation has yet to issue an official statement detailing the cause of the collision or the extent of injuries.

This latest disruption adds to a series of operational challenges on the Kaduna–Abuja route, prompting commuters and safety advocates to call for a review of maintenance practices and stricter adherence to safety standards to prevent future accidents.

For passengers on board, the experience was a stark reminder of the potential risks of rail travel, but also of the importance of swift emergency response and clear communication during crises.

“We are grateful that no lives were lost,” a passenger said. “But this kind of incident cannot be allowed to happen again. Safety has to be the priority on every journey.”

Monday’s collision has left many commuters demanding accountability, improved rail infrastructure, and reassurance that the system can reliably protect passengers along one of Nigeria’s most vital transport corridors.
