The United Bank for Africa (UBA) has dismissed as false and malicious a viral social media claim alleging that its Group Chairman, Tony O. Elumelu, has divorced his wife, describing the report as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and damage his reputation.
In a formal notice issued on Sunday, the bank said the publication and similar content circulating online were “entirely fabricated, reckless, and without basis,” insisting that no such development had occurred.
UBA stated that the matter has been reported to law enforcement authorities, who have already begun investigations into the origin and spread of the claims.
According to the bank, three individuals allegedly linked to the creation and dissemination of the content have been arrested. They were identified as Kingsley Akunemeihe, Chigozie Success Ihebom, and John Surpruchi Nwanorue.
The financial institution said investigations are ongoing and could lead to further arrests and prosecutions of others involved in originating or amplifying the claims.
The bank issued a stern warning to individuals and platforms currently sharing the content, directing them to immediately remove the publication and desist from further dissemination.
It also instructed those involved to preserve all relevant records, including digital communications and metadata, pending further legal action.
“Failure to comply will result in the initiation of legal proceedings, including claims for defamation, injunctive relief and damages,” the statement said.
UBA reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the integrity and reputation of its brand and its chairman, noting that it would pursue all available legal avenues-both civil and criminal-against those found culpable.
The statement was signed by Alero Ladipo, Group Head, Brand, Marketing and Corporate Communications at UBA.
The development highlights growing concerns over the spread of misinformation on social media and its potential impact on individuals and corporate entities.
