The United States Embassy Abuja has issued a security alert warning of possible protests in the Federal Capital Territory on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, citing rising tensions linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
The advisory comes amid reports of sporadic demonstrations in some Northern states and Lagos by members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), also known as Shites, following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Previous protests by similar groups have reportedly escalated into violent clashes with Nigerian security forces.
In its statement to U.S. citizens, the embassy described a “high potential for protests” in Abuja and urged Americans living in or visiting the city to remain indoors. Citizens were advised to avoid protest areas and large gatherings, remain vigilant in public spaces such as shopping centres, cinemas, and places of worship, and closely follow local media for updates.
The mission also recommended reviewing personal security plans, keeping mobile phones fully charged, carrying proper identification, maintaining a low profile, and varying travel routes and times to reduce predictability. Awareness of emergency exits and building egress points was also advised.
Despite the warning, the Consular Sections of the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General Lagos remain open. The embassy urged Americans to monitor its official website for ongoing updates and provided emergency contact numbers for assistance in Abuja, Lagos, and Washington, D.C.
While the statement did not name specific groups expected to protest, it linked the advisory to the broader “current conflict with Iran.” The alert follows a global security warning issued by the U.S. State Department on Sunday, cautioning Americans in Nigeria and worldwide to exercise increased vigilance amid escalating hostilities between the U.S. and Iran.
The State Department advisory highlighted that the evolving situation could affect travel and safety, including potential air travel disruptions. It urged U.S. citizens to follow the guidance of the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate and enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for timely updates.
The embassy also encouraged Americans to join the “U.S. Department of State Security Updates for U.S. Citizens” WhatsApp channel for real-time security information.
