Trump Threat: Adeleke calls for peaceful dialogue between Nigeria and the U.S.
Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has appealed for renewed diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and the United States in response to recent tensions sparked by U.S. President Donald Trump’s comments on Nigeria’s security situation.
In a statement issued on Monday by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke urged both nations to prioritise dialogue and cooperation within the framework of their long-standing and productive diplomatic relationship.
“I appeal to the Presidency of the United States of America to support Nigeria in fully implementing its recently developed National Security Strategy,” Adeleke said. “The new strategy is comprehensive and capable of confronting the monster of banditry and terrorist killings affecting many parts of the country.”
The governor expressed sympathy to families affected by insecurity in northern Nigeria, describing the U.S. leader’s comments as a “wake-up call” for stronger action. He stressed the need for Nigeria to intensify counter-terrorism operations while strengthening collaboration with international allies.
“Nigeria suffers from unfortunate killings across the northern region, which have claimed many innocent lives. A high-level engagement at the presidential level will help the American government understand the ongoing operations, successes, and challenges in our fight against terrorism,” he stated.
Adeleke called on the international community, particularly the United States, to expand its technical and logistical support to Nigeria’s security agencies rather than considering unilateral military intervention.
“Peaceful dialogue between Abuja and Washington is the key – not military action by the American government,” he added.
The governor also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his diplomatic efforts to ease tensions and reassure international partners of Nigeria’s commitment to peace and accountability.
“This is the time to unite as a nation behind our President to confront internal and external threats and protect our people,” Adeleke said. “We must strengthen our democracy through peace, not war.”
Adeleke emphasised that bipartisan support for Nigeria’s national security leadership was essential to ensuring stability and deepening democratic governance.
