Truecaller Lite Expands Caller ID and Scam Protection to Millions of Android Users in Nigeria

Truecaller has announced the expansion of Truecaller Lite, a lightweight application designed for entry-level Android smartphones, aimed at providing caller identification and scam protection to millions of users across Nigeria.

The company said Nigeria was among the first markets globally to receive Truecaller Lite, adding that the response from Nigerian users helped validate the product before its rollout to 11 additional markets across Africa, Latin America, and Asia.

Truecaller Lite is available to Nigerian users through the Google Play Store and partner original equipment manufacturer (OEM) channels, enabling more users with entry-level devices to access protection against spam calls, fraud, and unwanted communication.

The company explained that many markets experiencing rising cases of spam and fraud also have a high concentration of entry-level Android devices, which often have limited storage, memory, and processing capacity.

According to Truecaller, the new app was built specifically to address these challenges, occupying only 10 MB of storage while providing essential features such as caller ID, spam and fraud blocking, default dialer functions, number search, and contacts management.

The company said Truecaller Lite is a separate native Android application and not a reduced version of the main Truecaller app. It added that users receive the same level of protection as the main app, supported by the company’s global database, which identified more than 68 billion spam and fraud calls worldwide in 2025.

Truecaller noted that Nigeria recorded a high level of spam activity in 2025, emerging as Africa’s most spammed country, with 51 per cent of unknown calls received by Nigerian users classified as spam or fraud.

Commenting on the development, Truecaller Chief Executive Officer, Rishit Jhunjhunwala, said access to safe communication should not be determined by the type of smartphone a person uses.

“Safe communication should not depend on the phone you have. The next billion users live in markets where entry-level devices are often the norm. Truecaller Lite is a new product built specifically for them,” he said.

Following its earlier launch in Nigeria and Colombia, Truecaller Lite has now expanded to Kenya, Ghana, Algeria, Chile, Egypt, Iraq, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia, with further launches expected across emerging markets.

In Nigeria, the application is available for download on compatible devices through the Google Play Store and the Transsion app store.
