Tambuwal cites PDP divisions, leadership disputes as reason for ADC switch

Aminu Waziri Tambuwal

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives and ex-Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has revealed that internal crises, leadership disagreements, and persistent divisions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) prompted his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a statement shared via his X handle on Thursday , Tambuwal said that after “deep reflection and consultations,” he formally resigned his membership of the PDP, notifying his ward chairman in writing. He acknowledged the PDP’s role in his political career, including his tenures as Speaker and Governor, but said the party’s growing internal challenges made it increasingly difficult for him to continue.

“The persistent internal crisis, leadership disagreements, and growing divisions within the PDP have made it increasingly difficult to continue my membership of the party,” Tambuwal wrote. “These developments have unfortunately weakened the unity and direction that once defined the party and have necessitated this decision.”

Tambuwal added that he and his supporters have now officially joined the ADC, describing it as a platform that aligns with his vision for Nigeria. He said his choice was guided by a belief in “a stronger political platform built on integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, and a clear commitment to national development.”

He further emphasised that his commitment to public service, democracy, justice, and national unity remains unchanged.

Political analysts say Tambuwal’s defection highlights the ongoing internal strife within the PDP, which has been grappling with leadership tussles and factional disagreements in recent months. Observers note that such divisions have contributed to a number of high-profile defections ahead of the 2027 general elections, potentially weakening the party’s cohesion and electoral prospects.

Tambuwal’s move to the ADC is widely seen as both a personal political recalibration and a reflection of broader challenges facing Nigeria’s opposition parties, particularly in maintaining unity amid competing ambitions and ideological differences.
