Sir Marc Wabara @75: Celebrating a life of impact, integrity and influence

Sir Marc Wabara

Two years ago, I wrote in celebration of Sir Marc Wabara at 73 and described him as an eagle -majestic, watchful and enduring. Today, at 75, that imagery feels even more fitting. For if time has done anything, it has only burnished the grace, depth and strength of a man whose life has been defined by discipline, intellect, patriotism and an uncommon commitment to grooming others.

Sir Wabara who reached the milestone age of 75 on Wednesday, February 25, stands not only as a successful banker and boardroom strategist, but as an institution in himself, a bridge between generations, sectors and even cultures. His life story remains one of the finest illustrations of the Nigerian possibility.

Born in Abeokuta, Ogun State, to parents from Ohambele in Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State, he embodies the Nigerian mosaic in a way few can genuinely claim. He grew up in the South-West, schooled in the North at Federal Government College, Sokoto, and later studied Banking and Finance at the University of Lagos before earning advanced degrees in the United States. That journey shaped not just a career, but a worldview – pan-Nigerian, broad-minded and inclusive.

Over the decades, Sir Marc carved his path through Nigeria’s corporate corridors with quiet authority. As Chairman of Overt Energy Limited, he brought discipline and strategic foresight to the oil and gas sector. Long before indigenous participation became fashionable rhetoric, he was part of the generation that proved Nigerians could build, manage and sustain serious enterprises in critical sectors.

Yet, for all his accomplishments, what has always stood out is not merely what he built, but who he built. Many professionals across banking, energy, public service and private enterprise trace their confidence and competence to his mentorship. He is deliberate about nurturing talent, often away from the spotlight. Titles have never defined him; impact has.

When I first interviewed him in 2017, what struck me was not only his clarity of thought but also his youthful energy. Even then, he radiated the composure of a man deeply at peace with himself. When I once asked him the secret of his vitality, his answer was contentment, gratitude to God, and unwavering faith.

At 75, that philosophy remains evident. He is steady, reflective and remarkably optimistic about Nigeria’s future, even when the nation tests the patience of its most faithful sons.

His patriotism has never been performative. He has consistently engaged national issues with sincerity, speaking against insecurity, advocating responsible leadership and urging Nigerians to embrace unity beyond tribe or creed. It is therefore no surprise that past leaders, including former President Muhammadu Buhari, have acknowledged his uniquely Nigerian journey and outlook.

In his home state of Abia, he has remained a voice of conscience. Though his own gubernatorial aspiration in 2015 did not materialize, his desire for good governance has never waned. Today, he watches developments in the state, and the country, with the calm perspective of an elder statesman who understands that transformation is a marathon, not a sprint.

At 75, Sir Marc has transitioned gracefully into advisory and consultancy roles, offering his wealth of experience in financial services, oil and gas, and real estate.

For us at Business Hallmark, he remains more than a respected figure; he is family. A steady pillar. A source of encouragement in difficult seasons. His generosity – of time, counsel and resources – has strengthened many endeavors quietly and meaningfully.

The age 75 is often called the platinum age, an era of distilled wisdom. In Sir Marc Wabara, that wisdom is matched by humility and a still-burning passion for Nigeria. The eagle has not retired to the nest; it still soars, surveying the landscape with clarity and hope.

As he marks this milestone, we celebrate the lives he has shaped. May the Almighty grant him continued strength, peace and many more seasons of influence.

Happy 75th birthday, Sir Marc Wabara.
