South African footballer Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, sparking an outpouring of grief across the country just weeks after he featured for Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The midfielder, who played for South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns, passed away under circumstances that have not yet been made public.
The news was confirmed on Saturday by South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, who paid tribute to the player and described his death as a tragic loss for the nation.
“I have learnt with profound shock and sadness of the passing of Jayden Adams,” McKenzie said in a statement.
“South African football has lost a gifted young player whose talent, dedication and passion inspired many. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, teammates and supporters during this painful time.”
Reports from South African media indicated that police have launched an investigation after the body of a 25-year-old man was discovered at a residence in the Cape Town suburb of Schotschekloof on Saturday morning.
Authorities have not disclosed further details, while officials have appealed for patience as investigations continue.
McKenzie urged the public to respect the privacy of Adams’ family and avoid spreading unverified information.
“The cause of Jayden’s death has not yet been established. We appeal to the media and members of the public to allow the relevant authorities to complete their work and to give his loved ones the space they need to mourn,” he said.
Adams had recently represented South Africa at the World Cup, where he played in all three group-stage matches and helped the national team reach the knockout rounds for the first time in their history.
Bafana Bafana’s impressive campaign eventually ended with a defeat to tournament co-hosts Canada in the round of 32.
One of the most memorable moments of Adams’ World Cup journey came when he featured in South Africa’s 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic despite having received news of his grandmother’s death only hours earlier.
The midfielder earned widespread praise for his resilience and commitment to the national cause.
Since making his senior international debut in 2022, Adams had become an important member of the South African national team. He was also part of the squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.
At club level, Adams rose to prominence with Stellenbosch FC before securing a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025.
His time with Sundowns proved highly successful, as he helped the club capture both the South African league title and the CAF Champions League crown.
The South African Football Players Union joined in mourning the midfielder, describing his death as a devastating loss for the football community.
Tributes from teammates, supporters and football officials continued to pour in on Saturday as the nation remembered a player widely regarded as one of South Africa’s brightest talents and a key figure in the future of its national team.
