England manager Thomas Tuchel has named Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke in his 26-man squad for the FIFA World Cup, while notable stars including Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Trent Alexander-Arnold were left out.
Tuchel unveiled the squad on Friday, insisting he selected “the best possible team” rather than simply the most talented players available.
“My job is to pick the best possible team, not necessarily the 26 most talented players,” the German tactician said during his news conference.
The squad features a blend of experienced internationals and emerging talents, with captain Harry Kane leading the attack alongside Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins.
Tuchel explained that Toney’s inclusion was based on the striker’s unique qualities.
“Toney has very special skills that could help us,” he said.
In midfield, Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Kobbie Mainoo and veteran Jordan Henderson made the cut, while the defence includes John Stones, Marc Guehi and Djed Spence.
Tuchel expressed confidence in Stones despite the defender’s recent fitness concerns.
“I believe he is a world-class player, an amazing character and a proven winner,” he said. “He is still on the highest level when I see him play.”
The England boss also defended his decision to include Spence, describing the full-back as unique within the squad.
“He is the fastest player in our squad and he loves to defend in one-on-ones,” Tuchel explained. “I can trust him and he adds something to our group which makes him unique.”
On Madueke, Tuchel said the winger’s direct style and ability to unsettle defences influenced his selection.
“I believe in his ability to change matches and disrupt defensive organisations with his one-on-ones,” he said.
Tuchel added that building team chemistry and unity was central to his squad selection.
“It is about building a brotherhood. It is about building excitement and a certain energy,” he stated. “I’m so sure we picked the right squad.”
The former Chelsea F.C. manager also revealed that he plans to rotate players during the group stage because of the expected heat, humidity and demanding conditions of the tournament.
“History shows it makes sense to rotate in the beginning of the tournament,” he said. “But I also don’t want to lose the chance to build connections on the pitch.”
England’s squad announcement has already generated intense debate among fans, particularly following the omission of defender Harry Maguire, with Tuchel admitting he was “surprised” by reactions to the decision.
The squad also includes goalkeepers Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson and James Trafford, while youngsters Alex Scott, Rio Ngumoha and Josh King are expected to train with the team during preparations for the tournament.
