Rivers assembly moves to impeach Gov Fubara over alleged misconduct

The Rivers State House of Assembly has initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, citing allegations of gross misconduct.

The process commenced during plenary on Thursday – allegedly supervised by Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory – with Speaker Martins Amaewhule presiding over the session. Major Jack, the assembly leader, formally read the charges of gross misconduct, which were signed by 26 lawmakers.

Amaewhule announced that the notice of gross misconduct will be officially served on Governor Fubara within the next seven days.

The move reflects ongoing tensions between Fubara and his predecessor, Wike. The dispute traces back to December 5, 2025, when a group of Rivers lawmakers led by the speaker defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a switch Fubara later formalised.

Despite the party realignments, hostilities between Fubara and Wike have persisted, culminating in the March 2025 declaration of emergency rule in the state. Many lawmakers in the Rivers assembly remain loyal to Wike, underscoring the political divide fueling the impeachment move.
