A retired Nigerian Army officer and former Director of Defence Information, Major General Rabe Abubakar (retd), has died while in captivity, two weeks after he and his wife were abducted by bandits in Katsina State.
The Katsina State Government confirmed the development on Friday, describing the incident as a tragic loss to the state and the nation.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu, the government disclosed that the retired general died from health complications while being held by his abductors.
According to the commissioner, Abubakar, who reportedly suffered from diabetes and hypertension, succumbed to complications arising from the ailments despite efforts by the state government and security agencies to secure his release.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity. Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy,” Mu’azu stated.
“The deceased retired General died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension.
“His abduction and subsequent death are not only a loss to his family and Katsina State but a monumental loss to the entire country.”
The commissioner conveyed the condolences of Governor Dikko Umaru Radda to the family of the deceased, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the persistent security challenges facing communities in the state and across the country.
He said the governor viewed the development as a “dark moment” and stressed the need for stronger collaboration in tackling criminal elements responsible for insecurity.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family during this difficult time. May the soul of the departed retired Major General Rabe Abdulakdir rest in eternal peace,” the statement added.
The retired military officer and his wife were kidnapped in the Matazu area of Katsina State while travelling to attend a wedding ceremony.
Following their abduction, a video surfaced showing the couple in captivity. In the footage, the kidnappers demanded the release of three of their detained associates identified as Sani, Aminu and Nasiru, and also requested the return of livestock they claimed had been confiscated from them.
The general’s wife appealed to the Katsina State Government and traditional leaders in five local government areas to help facilitate the demands of the abductors in order to secure their freedom.

Major General Abubakar also spoke briefly in the video, urging dialogue and peaceful engagement. He noted that the kidnappers had expressed a willingness to pursue peaceful coexistence if their grievances were addressed.
His death has sparked fresh concerns over the worsening security situation in parts of northern Nigeria, where kidnapping for ransom and banditry continue to pose significant threats to residents and travellers.
Before his death, Abubakar was widely respected for his contributions to the Nigerian military and his service as Director of Defence Information, a role in which he served as a key spokesman for the Armed Forces.
