Report: Tinubu Removes IGP Egbetokun, Names Tunji Disu as Successor

IGP Kayode Egbetokun

President Bola Tinubu has reportedly dismissed Kayode Egbetokun from his role as Inspector General of Police (IGP), appointing Tunji Disu, Assistant Inspector General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, as his replacement.

According to SaharaReporters, citing senior police officials and sources within the Police Service Commission, Egbetokun was directed to prepare his handover notes ahead of Disu’s assumption of office.

“Egbetokun was at the Presidential Villa yesterday and was told to prepare his handover notes. He will be handing over to Tunji Disu,” one source told the outlet.

The reported decision comes amid concerns over Egbetokun’s competence and health. “He is power-drunk, and the scandals are just too many. The President said he should leave to focus on getting treatment for himself. You know, he has kidney-related medical issues,” the source added.

SaharaReporters also reported that police officers reportedly celebrated the news of his removal on Monday, despite intervention by First Lady Remi Tinubu, who allegedly wanted Egbetokun to remain in office.

Egbetokun’s tenure as IGP was marked by controversies, including an extended stay beyond the mandatory retirement age of 60 or 35 years of service, which drew criticism for favoritism and disregard for institutional rules. Questionable promotions within his office, particularly that of Bukola Yemisi Kuti, a Principal Staff Officer allegedly linked to Egbetokun personally, also fueled debate over his leadership.
