The nation on Wednesday laid to rest Late Brigadier General Omo Braimah, Captain Ismail, and other fallen soldiers at the Maimalari Cantonment Cemetery in Maiduguri, Borno State, during a solemn ceremony marked by full military honours and emotional tributes.
Braimah, the Brigade Commander of the Joint Task Force in Benisheikh, Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State, alongside other soldiers, was killed following a Boko Haram assault on a military base in the area.
The burial was conducted with strict military protocol and drew senior government officials, top military commanders and grieving families, who gathered to honour officers that died in active service to the nation.
According to a statement from the Defence Headquarters, the ceremony reflected national respect for soldiers who paid the supreme price in the line of duty while defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and internal security.
In attendance were the Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, as well as other senior military officers.
The Defence Headquarters said the fallen officers were honoured as patriots whose courage and sacrifice would continue to inspire serving personnel across the Armed Forces.
Military rites, including the reading of service citations and prayers for the repose of the deceased, were performed in the presence of next of kin, colleagues, and other mourners.
The statement noted that the atmosphere at the cemetery was heavy with grief as families mourned their loved ones, even as the nation paid tribute to their service and sacrifice.
Senior officials who paid tribute described the deceased as brave officers who stood firm in the face of danger and gave their lives to ensure the safety of others.
The Defence Headquarters further stated that the sacrifices of the soldiers underscored the human cost of ongoing security operations across the country.
It reaffirmed the commitment of the Armed Forces to continue protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty while honouring personnel who fall in the course of duty.
