There have been mixed reactions within the Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following a Federal High Court ruling in Ibadan and the inauguration of a new state caretaker executive committee led by Ikenga Johnjude Uchenna Okere.
Last Friday, a Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, and presided over by Justice Uche Agomoh, nullified the PDP national convention held on November 15, 2025. The court barred the party’s national officers, led by Kabiru Turaki and elected at the Ibadan convention, from parading themselves as members of the PDP National Working Committee.
The judgment has been greeted with jubilation by the camp of former PDP National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu (Samdaddy), who described the ruling as a vindication of their position in the protracted leadership crisis within the party.
In contrast, the newly inaugurated Imo State PDP caretaker committee, led by Okere, has also welcomed recent developments, describing them as a “re-awakening” for the party in the state. Supporters of the new leadership say the inauguration marks a step in the right direction towards rebuilding and repositioning the PDP in Imo State.
The caretaker committee was officially inaugurated on Wednesday at the PDP South East Zonal Office in Enugu, Enugu State, in the presence of several party leaders from across the zone. The committee is mandated to manage the affairs of the party in Imo State for 90 days, pending the conduct of congresses.
In his remarks at the event, the PDP South East Zonal Chairman, Chief Ali Odefa, charged members of the caretaker committee to work in unity to reposition the party for future electoral victories. He urged them to focus on alleviating what he described as poverty, hunger and suffering allegedly caused by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“I congratulate members of the caretaker committee of the PDP who have been inaugurated to run the affairs of the party for 90 days, pending congress,” Odefa said. “This is to shame those who are breeding crisis in the party to cause its fall. PDP is more alive now and with better prospects.”
Odefa further tasked party members to remain committed to service and unity, stressing that the 2027 general election would be critical for the survival of Nigerians. “The next election is a contest of survival—between Nigerians and the APC—because of the level of hunger, poverty and unrest in the country,” he said.
In his inaugural address, Okere assured party faithful that the caretaker committee would work diligently and collectively to rebuild the PDP in Imo State. “As a party, we will work together to make PDP flourish in Imo State and reclaim power to improve the lives of our people who have been subjected to poverty and suffering,” he said.
