Obi media group urges EFCC to focus on corruption, not social media activists

The Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to concentrate on tackling corruption and financial crimes rather than pursuing cases involving social media activists.

In a statement issued on Thursday by its spokesman, Idris Zekeri, the group expressed concern over what it described as the agency’s increasing attention to matters that it believes distract from its primary anti-corruption responsibilities.

The statement followed the invitation and interrogation of two social media personalities, Randy Peter and Mama Pee, by the EFCC over allegations of naira abuse.

While acknowledging the commission’s role in Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts, POMR said the agency should devote greater resources to investigating and prosecuting large-scale corruption cases affecting the country’s economy and development.

According to the group, corruption remains one of the biggest obstacles to national progress, contributing to economic hardship, weakened public institutions and declining public confidence in governance.

“The EFCC remains a critical institution in the fight against corruption, but its efforts should be directed at addressing the numerous corruption cases confronting the nation,” the statement said.

POMR argued that focusing on social media-related cases does little to address broader concerns about public sector corruption, economic crimes and the misuse of public resources.

The group also warned that public confidence in the anti-graft agency could be undermined if citizens perceive its actions as targeting critics or political opponents rather than combating corruption.

It stressed that public trust remains essential to the EFCC’s effectiveness, particularly in encouraging whistleblowing and citizen cooperation in anti-corruption investigations.

The organisation called on the commission to prioritise high-profile financial crimes, public sector embezzlement and other forms of economic sabotage that have significant implications for national development.

POMR further urged the EFCC to avoid becoming involved in what it described as political or social disputes, insisting that the agency’s resources should be focused on fulfilling its statutory mandate.

The statement comes after Randy Peter and Mama Pee, both known supporters of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), were questioned by EFCC operatives at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday over alleged abuse of the naira.

The pair were released after several hours of interrogation on Thursday but were reportedly directed to return for further questioning.

POMR has maintained that the anti-graft agency should channel its efforts towards addressing corruption and economic crimes that directly affect the welfare of Nigerians and the country’s development prospects.
