OAU dental student dies by suicide after exam results release
The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Dental Students’ Association has announced the death of one of its members, who reportedly took his own life shortly after the release of examination results.
In a statement on Wednesday, President of the Ife University Dental Students’ Association (IFUDSA), Adebayo Idris, described the incident as a devastating loss to the faculty and the entire student community.
“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of one of our colleagues in the Faculty of Dentistry. We have received the painful news that he took his own life shortly after the release of examination results,” Idris said.
He described the tragedy as not only the loss of a promising young mind, but also a stark reminder of the silent struggles faced by many students.
Idris urged students to seek help and support one another in times of distress.
“We understand that this tragedy will leave many in shock, with questions and emotions that may be difficult to process. We encourage all members of our faculty to reach out to one another, offer support, and seek professional help when needed. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and no one should ever feel alone in their struggles,” he said.
The association also reaffirmed its commitment to improving student welfare and strengthening mental health support systems to prevent future tragedies.
