Nnamdi Kanu’s wife addresses divorce controversy

Uchechi Okwu-Kanu

Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, wife of the convicted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has refuted reports claiming that she had filed for divorce, describing the allegations as false and misleading.

In a statement posted on her verified X account on Friday, Okwu-Kanu said she was compelled to respond following the circulation of reports suggesting that she had initiated legal proceedings to dissolve her marriage.

She categorically denied the claims, urging members of the public to disregard the reports.

“For the avoidance of doubt, I have not filed for divorce. The publication is entirely false and should be treated as misinformation,” she stated.

Okwu-Kanu expressed concern over what she described as the growing tendency by some individuals and platforms to publish unverified stories about her family.

According to her, the spread of inaccurate information without proper fact-checking undermines the principles of responsible journalism and misleads the public.

She advised the public to rely only on information issued directly by her or through officially authorised representatives, warning against accepting unverified reports as factual.

The IPOB leader’s wife also thanked those who contacted her to verify the claims before sharing them, noting that such caution helps prevent the spread of false information.

The controversy emerged amid ongoing legal developments involving Nnamdi Kanu, who remains in custody following his conviction on terrorism-related charges.

Kanu, who married Uchechi in 2009, was convicted by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja in November 2025 on multiple terrorism-related counts.

The court sentenced him to life imprisonment on five counts, while additional sentences of 20 years and five years were imposed on two other counts. The sentences are to run concurrently.

Following the judgment, Kanu filed a notice of appeal before the Court of Appeal on February 4, 2026, seeking to overturn both his conviction and sentence.

While legal proceedings continue, his wife has maintained public support for him and has remained active in responding to issues concerning his case and public perception.

Her latest statement seeks to put to rest speculation surrounding the state of their marriage, insisting that reports of divorce proceedings are entirely unfounded.
