The Nigerian Army on Friday retired 28 senior officers during a ceremonial pull-out parade held at the Headquarters Infantry Corps Centre in Jaji, Kaduna State.
The officers, made up of 17 Major-Generals and 11 Brigadier-Generals from the Nigerian Army Corps of Infantry, bowed out of active military service after reaching the statutory retirement period.
The event, attended by senior military officers, family members and well-wishers, was marked by emotional tributes, ceremonial parades and the symbolic pull-out of the retiring generals.
Speaking on behalf of the retirees, Major-General Usman Yusuf described the occasion as a significant milestone after decades of commitment and service to the nation.
He said the ceremony symbolised the end of a long journey that began from the moment each officer was commissioned into the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
Yusuf expressed appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Waidi Shaibu, for approving the ceremony in honour of the retiring officers, noting that the gesture reflected the Army’s recognition of their sacrifices and contributions.
He also commended the Commander of the Infantry Corps, Major-General Godwin Mutkut, for ensuring the successful organisation of the event.
The retired general recalled their formative years at the Nigerian Defence Academy and highlighted the collective contributions made by the outgoing officers toward strengthening the Nigerian Army and advancing its operational successes.
According to him, the experiences gathered throughout their careers helped shape them into disciplined and resilient officers capable of handling command, instructional and administrative responsibilities.
Yusuf charged serving personnel to remain steadfast in upholding professionalism, loyalty, discipline and sacrifice in the discharge of their duties.
He warned that Nigeria’s evolving security challenges require the military to remain vigilant and fully prepared to respond effectively.
“The operational demands on the Nigerian Army continue to grow, and the military must sustain its reputation for courage, resilience and professionalism,” he said.
Yusuf expressed optimism that younger officers would continue to build on the foundation of leadership and mentorship laid by the retiring generals.
He further described the Chief of Army Staff as a committed and visionary leader with the capacity to guide the Army through emerging security threats.
The retired officer also thanked national leaders, past and present, for the opportunity to serve the country, while acknowledging the support and sacrifices of their families throughout their years in uniform.
“To the Infantry Corps, this remains home. I will always be proud to identify as an Infantryman,” he said.
The ceremony ended with the presentation of souvenirs and farewell honours for the retired senior officers.
