Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has suggested that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, may no longer be alive following an extensive joint US-Israeli air assault on Tehran.
Addressing reporters on Saturday, Netanyahu said there were “many signs” indicating that Khamenei could have been killed during the strikes on his reported compound in the Iranian capital. Iranian authorities have not confirmed the claim, and no official statement has been issued regarding the 86-year-old leader’s condition.
Satellite imagery circulated by international media appeared to show significant destruction at a site identified as Khamenei’s residential complex.
Massive Bombardment Reported
Israeli media reported that the attack on the compound involved heavy bombardment. Channel 12 said at least 30 bombs were dropped on the location.
Senior correspondent Amit Segal stated that Khamenei was believed to have been underground at the time of the strike, though possibly not inside his primary bunker. The report did not cite official sources.
Netanyahu also asserted that multiple senior figures within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), as well as top nuclear officials, were killed in the broader operation targeting Iranian military infrastructure.
Tehran has yet to verify those claims.
Intelligence Weighs Succession Risks
According to Reuters, citing sources briefed on US intelligence, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had assessed potential outcomes in the event of Khamenei’s death.
The intelligence reportedly suggested that hardline elements within the IRGC could swiftly assume control, potentially leading to a more rigid and confrontational leadership in Iran. The CIA has not publicly commented on the report.
Analysts note that such a transition could significantly alter Iran’s political dynamics and further complicate regional stability.
Largest Air Operation in IAF History
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) described the campaign as the largest coordinated flyover in the history of the Israeli Air Force.
In a statement, the military said about 200 fighter jets carried out synchronized strikes on approximately 500 targets across western and central Iran. The targets reportedly included missile launchers, air defence systems and other strategic military assets.
The IDF said hundreds of munitions were deployed in a carefully planned operation based on high-level intelligence, adding that the strikes significantly weakened Iran’s missile capabilities and expanded Israeli aerial superiority.
Regional Tensions Soar
The operation marks a dramatic escalation in hostilities between Israel, the United States and Iran. If confirmed, the death of Khamenei would represent a seismic shift in Iran’s power structure and could trigger unpredictable consequences across the Middle East.
With Tehran silent on the fate of its Supreme Leader, uncertainty continues to cloud the situation as the region braces for potential further retaliation and political upheaval.
