The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially adopted Peter Obi as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election following a unanimous decision at the party’s special convention.
The adoption was ratified through a voice vote by delegates and party members at the convention, held in the presence of officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The motion for Obi’s adoption was moved by Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, who urged delegates to endorse the former Anambra State governor as the party’s flag bearer. The proposal received overwhelming support from convention participants.
Former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege seconded the motion, describing Obi as the candidate best positioned to lead the party into the 2027 presidential election.
Following the adoption, attention shifted to the selection of a running mate, with former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso expected to emerge as Obi’s vice-presidential candidate.
In his acceptance speech, Obi outlined key priorities of his administration if elected president, including a commitment to significantly improve Nigeria’s electricity supply.
He pledged that Nigeria would generate more than 10,000 megawatts of electricity within four years, describing the target as achievable through reforms and investments in the power sector.
Obi also reiterated his commitment to economic recovery, good governance and improved public services, promising to focus on policies aimed at addressing the country’s developmental challenges.
